Springbok winger could be banned for 52 weeks after being cited

Sharks wing Makazole Mapimpi will face a disciplinary hearing after a citing complaint was made for an alleged eye gouge on Bordeaux-Bègles scrumhalf Maxime Lucu during a match in Durban.

The Springbok wingeri allegedly made contact with Lucu’s eye or eye area in the 36th minute of the match, which the Sharks won 32-3.

The EPCR has received a citing complaint against Mapimpi from the match citing commissioner Brian Campsall and the hearing will take place by video conference on Wednesday, 18 January by a independent disciplinary committee appointed by World Rugby.

The Sanctions for Foul Play Law 9.12 carries the following sanction entry points – Low End: 4 weeks; Mid-range: 8 weeks; Top end: 12 to 52 weeks.
