He had been battling motor neurone disease since his diagnosis in late 2019, nearly five years ago.

Burrow’s diagnosis came just two years after he retired from an outstanding 17-year career, during which he secured eight Grand Finals, three World Club Challenges, and two Challenge Cups. More details to follow.

The Rhinos announced Burrow’s death, honouring their former scrum-half and hooker as “a true inspiration throughout his life, whether on the rugby league field or during his battle with MND.”

The Prince of Wales described Burrow as a “legend” with “a huge heart.” In 2022, Burrow received the Helen Rollason Award at the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year ceremony, where his former Leeds teammate Kevin Sinfield was also recognised.

Burrow was honored for his tireless fundraising and raising awareness of MND while fighting the illness himself. Burrow spent his entire club career with Leeds, making over 400 appearances from 2001 to 2017.
