An Exeter Chiefs player who captains his university team is being investigated by rugby union’s national governing body after a video emerged of a brawl during a match.

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has confirmed it has launched a probe into Ollie Leatherbarrow following the incident that occurred during Exeter University’s clash with Cardiff University.

A video shows a large melee breaking out on the pitch after the BUCS Super League game ended at the Cardiff University Sports Ground on February 8 in front of 500 spectators. Along with the players, bystanders also get involved in the fight, WalesOnline reports.

The game was played on February 8 and attracted a crowd estimated at 500.

The RFU confirmed that Leatherbarrow is the player under investigation. In a statement the governing body said: “The player has been charged with conduct prejudicial to the interests of the union and the game, contrary to RFU Rule 5.12 and will appear before a disciplinary panel.”

The hearing is scheduled for Thursday evening.

A spokesperson for Cardiff University said: “We are aware of an incident following the game versus Exeter and are awaiting the outcome of an on going RFU investigation. Until the outcome of this investigation is known it would be inappropriate to offer further comment.”
