Stephen Larkham outlines the key playmaking duo set to lead the Brumbies this Super Rugby season

Edmed arrives in Canberra after a mixed but formative period with the NSW Waratahs. In 2025, he operated primarily in a secondary role to Lawson Creighton in the Waratahs’ No. 10 jersey.

Despite serving as the team’s chief goal-kicker and finishing the season as leading point-scorer, he was limited to just five starts across thirteen matches. The Waratahs showed improvement under new coach Dan McKellar but ultimately finished eighth and missed the finals, leaving Edmed searching for a clearer pathway to consistent minutes and responsibility.

That opportunity has arrived at the Brumbies, who signed Edmed on a two-year deal beginning in 2026. His pedigree is already well established. He was invited into Wallabies training for the Spring Tour in late 2024, made his Test debut against Ireland, and featured in representative fixtures including the ANZAC XV against the British and Irish Lions. While his international exposure has been stop start, it underlines the regard in which he is held by national selectors.

With Wallaby fullback Tom Wright sidelined after suffering an ACL injury in August, Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham is using the early trials to experiment with combinations that could shape the season. Speaking ahead of the club’s first trial against the Western Force, Larkham confirmed Edmed will be given immediate control.

“Tane will be starting at 10, but we will have Declan [Meredith] at fullback and that combination is something that we want wo see as a potential combination through the year but also Tane's been in the programme now for three weeks with the Wallabies players back in, and Declan's been here for five years or so, so he's got the runs on the board, he understands the system, he's very comfortable in that role of controlling the team around the paddock but we need to see Tane out there as soon as possible. We feel that this combination will give Tane a nice, settled introduction to the team.”

Edmed has also been fast tracked into preseason, arriving earlier than other Wallabies.

“The rest of the Wallabies have had an extra week off, or extra week of preparation. That's how we see it, it's not a week off, it's allowing us to get a few more metres into their training load.”

Larkham believes the fly-half fullback axis is central to how the Brumbies want to play.

“Tane needs to be out there on the field straight away in order to control the game the way that we want him to control it… It’s a really important position for us to fill.”
