Marcus Smith discovered he was South Africa-bound in Twickenham’s tunnel just seconds after coming off from England v Canada.

The new British and Irish Lions call-up came off the pitch after being replaced and was immediately led into the tunnel to be told the good news, with TV cameras catching glimpses of the career highlight.

Smith was born in Manila in the Philippines and picked up the game at the age of 7 with Centaurs RFC when his family decided to move to Singapore, he learnt the game there before moving to Sussex as a 13-year old. He has two younger brothers, Luc and Tomas.
