Wales star accused of ‘horrific’ eye gouge against Ireland

Wales rugby player Justin Tipuric is facing scrutiny on social media following the release of a video showing him making contact with Caelan Doris’ eyes.

The opening weekend of the 2023 Six Nations is in the books. Ireland presented why they are the number one ranked team in the world, with a dominant 34-10 win over Wales.

It was a fantastic match, but a potentially ban worthy incident involving the Wales flanker has surfaced.

One fan wrote: “I know the clock says 3 mins but that’s Ryan’s truck up before the first try. Would have been about 90 seconds in to the game? This could break Schalk Burger’s record for earliest recorded eye gouge in a match?”

A second commented: “That looks very bad.”

Another said: “I think you can be cited for “making contact with the eye area” but this is clearly no more than accidental. He’s defending on his line and is reaching around the carrier to get a hand on the ball. Open hand, no gouge, and immediately release:

A fourth wrote: “Oh. Oh no. That somehow looks worse than the photo and the photo looks *really* bad. Noticed one or two others like looked a bit dodgy live, too, which I now think might be worth looking back at, too!”

POSSIBLE EYE-GOUGE:

6 stars who underperformed in the opening round of the 2023 Six Nations

We take at five players who flopped during the second round of the 2023 Guinness Six Nations, including two disappointing England stars.

#1. Alun Wyn Jones (Wales)

Wales Online 5/10: “One lovely offload, many decent tackles, was in double figures for carries. But Ireland were dynamic when the game was won and lost in the opening half.”

#2. Ben Curry (England)

Guardian 5/10: “Missed three tackles in the first half, discipline not great and flew out of the line for White’s try. Lacked composure.”
