Warren Gatland today dropped a major hint to who may captain the British & Irish Lions during their tour of New Zealand in 2017.

The Lions will play three Tests against New Zealand in June and July. It is the first Lions tour to the country since a 3-0 whitewash in 2005.

When asked today in Dublin who is the current favourite to lead the tourists, Gatland made a startling revelation.

“It will probably be someone who is doing the captaincy role for their country at the moment.” revealed Gatland.

“We will see how the Six Nations go and go from there,

“I don’t have anyone in mind at the moment but hopefully that will evolve over the next six months

This rules out the likes of Alun Wyn Jones and England superstar Maro Itoje, who both had previously been linked with possibly leading the tourists.

That means it’s between Wales’ Sam Warburton, Englands’ Dylan Hartley and Ireland’s Rory Best.

New Zealander Gatland will announce his playing squad for next summer’s tour on 19 April.
