Brive fly-half Matthieu Ugalde could be set for a lengthy ban after making contact with the eyes of Grenoble’s Armand Batle during their Top 14 clash on Sunday.

The match had already seen three players sent off, when a brawl broke out just before half time, with both sides exchanging blows along the touchline and in the technical area.

French rugby fans were horrified by what they saw this evening.

Although traditional French rugby has always been associated with free flowing and imaginative back play, there has always been a dark side to the game in the country.

Indeed eye gouging has never been tackled like it has been in other countries, particularity in the lower leagues, and as a result, the Top 14 often sees incidents occur during the course of the season.

However few incidents have been as blatant as what we saw during the ill tempered game between Grenoble and Brive this evening.

The match had already seen three players sent off, when a brawl broke out just before half time, with both sides exchanging blows along the touchline and in the technical area.

However, things only got worse in the second half, when Brive’s Matthieu Ugalde made contact Armand Battle’s eye.

The incident will surely leave Ugalde facing a lengthy ban when Top 14 officials review the video evidence in the coming week.
