Scarlets wing DTH van der Merwe to miss rest of season

  • DTH van der Merwe has been ruled out for the rest of the season because of a shoulder injury
  • The winger suffered the injury during Scarlets’ 46-10 defeat in the Pro12 against his former club Glasgow Warriors
  • The South African-born Canada back will see a specialist this week
Scarlets speedster winger  DTH van der Merwe has been ruled out for the rest of the Pro 12 season because of a shoulder injury.

Van der Merwe had a scan yesterday which revealed significant shoulder damage and the speedster will see a consultant today.

The winger left the field in considerable pain after a heavy challenge in the first half of Saturday’s Pro12 46-10 defeat to his former side Glasgow and was due to undergo a scan on the injury yesterday.

But it could be countered by the imminent return of Wales international centre Scott Williams, who hasn’t played since damaging knee ligaments in the World Cup clash against England in September.

Van der Merwe, who joined Scarlets from Glasgow ahead of the 2015-16 season, became the first player representing a tier-two nation to score a try in four successive Rugby World Cup matches in last year’s tournament for Canada.
