BREAKING: Eddie Jones confirmed as head coach, starts work next month

Eddie Jones has been appointed as Head Coach of the Japan national side, after stepping down from his role with the Wallabies.

The Aussie was heavily rumoured to be linked with the role throughout the Rugby World Cup, which saw Australia fail to progress out of the pool stages for the first time in their history.

The 63-year-old was reported to have undergone an interview with the JRFU, just two weeks before commencing his 2023 Rugby World Cup campaign with the Wallabies.

This is Jones’ second run in charge of the Brave Blossoms, with his first time in charge coming from 2012 to 2015. The Australian was at the helm of Japan for their famous ‘Brighton Miracle’ victory against South Africa, during the pool stages of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Jones was often questioned about his future with Rugby Australia throughout the Rugby World Cup, yet the former England Head Coach insisted that he was dedicated to coaching the Wallabies. However, Jones stepped away from the role after just 10 months into an agreed five year contract.

Jones returns to the Far East in the New Year, and his wife and mother are both Japanese. He has previously coached in the Japan Rugby League One as the Assistant Coach of Suntory Sungoliath, and was seen at their opening match of the 2023/24 Japan Rugby League One season last weekend.

England will head to Japan to play a Test match against the Brave Blossoms on their home soil for the first time this summer.

The match will take place on Saturday, June 22, with the venue and kick-off time to be confirmed, and is a result of the Rugby Football Union and Japan Rugby Football Unions strengthening their relationship on the back of matches at Twickenham in 2018 and 2022.
