Eddie Jones backs current star to coach England one day

England head coach Eddie Jones has backed Owen Farrell to one day be head coach of the nations.

The Aussie, who has had Farrell as a key man of his set-up since taking charge of the red rose in 2015, has been impressed by his star mans development as a player and a man.

“Owen was my captain because he has the respect of the team, he’s a winner and he drives the competitive spirit of the team.” Jones said.

“He’s got a hunger to get into coaching and with his drive I don’t see any reason why he might not coach England one day.

“He’s certainly got the knowledge and numerous good mentors whether that be at Sarries or even his Dad.

“I hope we could even work together.”

Sarries teammate Jamie George revealed that while Farrell was sidelined from club and England duty by two serious ankle injuries, the playmaker “turned into our head coach”.

He added: “He is that good. He offers so much on and off the field. He is so, so important to this team.

“With his voice, with his actions, in the week the way he prepares, he shows people how it is done. I can’t speak highly enough of him.”

Owen Farrell and four other England stars post-career plans

The life of a rugby player can follow very similar trajectory. Unless you are one of the world’s biggest stars, many careers across the world retell the same story.

Working up through the youth teams, making a name in the first team, maybe a few loans and transfers and the inevitable retirement. However, from this point onward it can all become very different very fast.

Below, we look at the post career plans of five current England stars.

#1. OWEN FARRELL – COACHING

Following in the footsteps of his father Andy – who is currently head coach of Ireland – Farrell intends to go into coaching. Already in the middle of his coaching badges, he took centre stage as Mark McCall’s right hand man during this weekend’s 18-12 win against Sale Sharks.
