England international has come out of retirement and will play in rugby’s seventh tier

Former Wasps and England scrum-half Joe Simpson has joined Old Priorians – and is in line to make his debut for the Saints this Saturday against London Sussex.

Simpson (OP 06) – who made 230 appearances for Wasps in the Premiership (along with spells for Gloucester, Bath and Sale) and played for England at the 2011 World Cup – retired from the professional game in December 2022 and follows his brother Michael in pulling on the OPs shirt.

Looking ahead to his debut, Simpson told the club website:‘It’s great to be back playing at Perivale – St Benedict’s was a big part of my life and I’m looking forward to having a run out with some of the lads I’ve grown up with.’

#1. Phil Vickery (England)

  • Age: 46
  • Total caps:78
  • Last appearance: vs New Zealand (June 2014)

The World Cup-winning tighthead has played in four or five charity games this season and doesn’t appear to have lost a step.

He retired with 73 England caps and five Test appearances for the Lions, three of them against Australia in 2001 and two versus the Springboks in 2009.Advertisement

Although he missed the 2003 Grand Slam campaign through injury, Vickery returned to play a key role in England’s World Cup triumph in Australia.
