Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw visited Top 14 giants Clermont on Monday according to reports in France.

The 30-year-old visited Clermont’s training centre at the Stade Marcel Michelin and met with the team’s manager, Neil McIllroy, and also head coach Franck Azema, according to L’Equipe.

The French publication alleges that Laidlaw’s visit occurred as part of a proposed move for the 2017/2018 season, after his contract expires with Premiership side Gloucester.

Laidlaw’s deal with the Cherry and Whites expires next year and although he has the option to stay for a futher year, it’s understood that the clause will not be activated.

The Scotland talisman, who has scored 508 international points in his 51 caps, would join Morgan Parra in the battle for Clermont’s scrum-half spot.

Parra signed a four-year contract extension with les Jaunards last December, tying him to the club until 2020.
