England rugby’s jester Joe Marler jests he’d have bagged a try against Ireland if Danny Care hadn’t passed to Marcus Smith in the dying seconds.
RUCK’s 2024 Guinness Six Nations content powered by ISUZU.
Smith’s last gasp drop-goal sealed England’s stunning win, crushing Ireland’s Grand Slam hopes at Twickenham.
Down by two points, James Lowe’s late try shook things up, but Smith’s magic secured the victory, igniting Twickenham’s euphoria.
He wrote on X: “Zero points in 92 tests. It’s bollocks from you @dannycare and @MarcuSmith10 – I was walking it in……… if I managed to catch it”
Marler is the second most capped player of all-time never to score a try, behind only All Black prop Owen Franks who failed to cross the whitewash in any of his 108 caps.
Unwanted England records:
#1. Most carded player: James Haskell – 6
#2. Most caps without a try: Joe Marler – 92
The loosehead may have never managed a five-pointer for England over the course of his 92 caps, but it is still within his power to change that as he could continue playing under Borthwick for a while longer (unless he retires again).
Reacting to his record, Marler said: “Some people might call me crazy but I’m proud of it. Us props aren’t meant to score tries anyway,”
