Johnny Sexton ruled out of Six Nations opener

Ireland star fly-half Johnny Sexton will miss Ireland’s opening Six Nations clash of 2017 against Scotland after aggravating a calf injury.

“It’s better to leave him [Sexton] out this weekend,” Ireland’s forwards coach Simon Easterby said.

“We don’t want to compromise his calf any further.”

Paddy Jackson is line to wear the No 10 shirt against Scotland with Munster duo Rory Scannell and Ian Keatley providing cover.

Peter O’Mahony is also unavailable due to a tight hamstring while Andrew Trimble is struggling will a groin problem and will be monitored closely.

Keith Earls and Sean O’Brien both took a full part in training on Monday and Tuesday and are available for selection.
