Leicester boss leaves club with immediate effect

Leicester Tigers head coach Matt O’Connor has left the club with immediate effect.

O’Connor leaves 48 hours after Leicester lost 40-6 at Exeter in their opening Premiership game of the season.

Assistant coach and Tigers stalwart Geordan Murphy has been put in temporary charge.

Leicester missed out on a place in the Premiership play-offs for the first time in 14 seasons in May after ending the season in fifth place.

Chairman Peter Tom CBE said: ‘Matt was appointed head coach in April 2017 on the basis of his previous Premiership experience and his knowledge of the club.

‘But we believe the time is right to make this change in the best interests of the Tigers moving forward.

‘We would like to thank Matt for his hard work and commitment to the club in two spells at Welford Road, and we wish him and his family well for the future.’
