Maro Itoje’s smirk caught on camera after controversial England try

The video referee could have been deployed when Adam Beard, who appeared to be the intended target for the line-out, failed to get off the ground due to what looked like interference from Mary Itoje.

“I’m disappointed with the try,” said Wales coach Wayne Pivac.

“If we had an opportunity to review that try, it probably wouldn’t have been given.”

His opposite number Eddie Jones meanwhile seemed not to have seen it.

Jones said: “I don’t know what you [the questioner] are talking about, mate. You’ll have to ask the referee.”

One fan tweeted: “Watch the overhead replay. Very sneaky bump into Beard as he’s setting himself to jump. No wonder he couldn’t jump. Clear as day Beard gets nudged as he sets himself to jump.”

Another said: “Calculated gamble by Itoje. Knew what he was doing going across Beard to prevent the jump. Good giggle with Genge about getting away with it caught on the replays to. Couldn’t believe his luck.”

Four players Eddie Jones should drop – and who should replace them for Ireland

We pick four players who we think deserve a chance in the England XV following the unvoncincing win against Wales in the Six Nations.

#1. Elliot Daly

JOE 5/10: “Steady enough outing after being drafted in for the injured Manu Tuilagi. Kept wales honest in attack but fell off a couple of tackles, in defence.”

Replacement: Joe Marchant
