Premiership match could be CANCELLED as clubs financial trouble intensifies

London Irish Rugby Club is currently facing financial concerns, as players and staff have yet to receive their April wages.

There are reports that their match against Exeter could be cancelled due to player concerns over their insurance.

Despite being promised payment on Tuesday, funds had still not arrived by Wednesday morning.

London Irish is currently in the process of being taken over by an American consortium, which has caused delays in payment. The players have been called to a meeting on Wednesday for a further update.

The delay in wages is reminiscent of what happened at Worcester and Wasps earlier in the season, with both clubs struggling to pay wages before eventually going out of business.

However, Premiership Rugby’s CEO, Simon Massie-Taylor, remains confident that London Irish can move forward if the takeover goes through.

He states that Premiership Rugby and the Rugby Football Union have been engaging with both the current ownership and the future buyers, with positive signals coming from both sides.

The new ownership has reportedly met with players and staff, which is a positive signal of their intent.

The new investors are from the US and have interests in other sports, which is seen as a positive news story if the takeover goes ahead.
