“Re-Build Begins” Cardiff Bolster Squad With Seven Academy Graduates

Cardiff Rugby confirmed a huge uptake of academy graduates into their first team squad today, with seven confirmed Cardiff Pathway players making the step up for the 2023/24 United Rugby Championship season.

The announcement reflects the need for young, home-grown talents to add depth to the Welsh regional clubs. Cardiff have been hit hard by the recent budget cuts, which has seen a staggering 16 first team players leave the Cardiff Arms Park, including Wales internationals Dillon Lewis to Harlequins and Liam Williams to Kubota Spears in Japan.

There are several Wales U20s stars amongst the newcomers, in what looks like the start of an new era in the Welsh capital. Former Wales age-group captain Alex Mann is called up, with high hopes on the impressive back-rower. He’s joined by fellow Wales U20 teammates in versatile backs Cam Winnett (fullback/wing) and Jacob Beetham (fly half/ fullback) and back-rower Mackenzie Martin.

The additional call-ups include flanker Gwilym Bradley, adaptable fly half-fullback Evan Lloyd and prop Rhys Barratt.

Speaking to Wales Online about the call-up, Alex Mann said; “It’s an absolute honour to sign with my home club and it means a lot to me as I have been here for such a long time, developing through the age-grades.

“I’m looking forward to transitioning into the senior group and the opportunity to learn from so many established professional players and coaches. That experience will be invaluable in helping me develop my own game. I’m just really excited to train, work hard and see what the future holds.”
