This was supposed to be a defining afternoon. Instead, it turned into a bruising reality check. Prendergast struggled to convert Ireland’s territorial dominance into points, with two missed conversions — including a straightforward effort — proving particularly damaging.

The Irish Examiner called it “a torrid experience,” highlighting an under-hit kick that sparked a dangerous counter-attack. RUCK pointed to a near-interception by Louis Lynagh and visible discomfort before he was replaced by Jack Crowley. Rugby Pass bluntly suggested it’s “hard to see him starting in Twickenham.”

England needed their captain to set the tone in Edinburgh. Instead, Itoje delivered a subdued display. He was caught out wide for Scotland’s opening try, spilled ball in promising territory and was withdrawn before the hour mark.

The Telegraph noted England “needed more from their captain,” while Rugby Pass criticised his defensive positioning. RUCK added that he was “massively outpaced on the wing” for the opener.

Leadership was required. Authority was absent.

Underhill’s reputation is built on defensive dominance, but this was an uncharacteristically off-colour shift. He slipped off a tackle on his Bath team-mate Finn Russell, who kicked through for Scotland’s third try, and managed just five tackles before being replaced at half-time.

The Telegraph described England’s defence as “disastrous,” with Underhill unusually part of the problem. Planet Rugby summed it up simply: he’s “had better days in an England shirt.”

For a player known as an enforcer, it was a surprisingly quiet afternoon.

Beard’s afternoon unravelled in brutal fashion. Having helped Wales repel a French attack, he immediately handed possession back with a wayward grubber kick that gifted Matthieu Jalibert a try before half-time.

Wales Online highlighted a missed tackle on Theo Attissogbe in the build-up to France’s opener, while RUCK described it as “an afternoon to forget.” Though he added some lineout stability, the defensive lapses and costly error defined his display.

Against a ruthless France side, those mistakes proved fatal.

Scotland won comfortably, but McBeth endured a torrid time at scrum-time. Rugby Pass reported he and Zander Fagerson were driven back on multiple occasions, handing England a foothold when they were under pressure.

Planet Rugby noted he was replaced in the 49th minute after struggling against Joe Heyes. While he didn’t miss a tackle and worked hard in defence, the scrum issues were glaring.

A tough lesson at Test level.

From hat-trick hero to villain in seven days. Arundell’s discipline cost England dearly in Edinburgh. He was first yellow-carded for not releasing, with England conceding 14 points during his absence, before a second yellow — upgraded to red — for taking Kyle Steyn out in the air.

The Telegraph described it as “two moments of mistiming” that cost England the game. The Express was harsher: “Hat-trick hero last week, brainless red card villain this week.”

His finishing remains electric. His discipline, on this occasion, was disastrous.
