The RFU wants to name Eddie Jones' successor before the 2023 World Cup, with the appointment potentially working under Jones at the tournament.
Twickenham has put together a “war room” where succession planning is underway with the objective of appointing the new management team next summer, ensuring they are in place in time for the 2024 Six Nations.
Richard Cockerill, who already works under Jones, is thought to be the leading candidate.
The Aussie has already endorsed him as his successor, and the fiery former Leicester and England hooker has wide experience after being head coach at Leicester, Toulon (on an interim basis) and Edinburgh.
One fan wrote that Cockerill would definitely be his choice to replace Jones with most of. the feedback on the possible appointment being majority postitice.
Meanwhile Sir Ian McGeechan has backed Leicester boss Steve Borthwick for the role.
He wrote: "The fact that his current contract with Leicester Tigers is up in June 2023 also means there would be no tug of war with his club, and if I was in his shoes I would be very keen to take on the role.
"I think those who argue that it is too soon for Borthwick are wrong. He has shown by the way Leicester play that he can produce a side playing attractive winning rugby, and he has the experience to bring that to England.
"I would say, however, that I think it’s probably too soon for Alex Sanderson or Lee Blackett, while Rob Baxter seems to have suggested that he prefers working steadily in the club environment, although he has toured with England."
