Scotland international Jamie Ritchie is set to leave USA Perpignan after just one season, despite arriving last summer as one of the club’s marquee signings.
The French side officially confirmed the Scottish flanker’s departure yesterday, even though he still had a year remaining on his contract under president François Rivière.
In a statement, USAP said the former Scotland captain had decided to return home to Scotland to be closer to his family and children, adding that the club fully respected his decision.
Although injuries and international duty limited his appearances following his move from Edinburgh, Ritchie still made a strong impression within the squad.
Across 15 appearances for Perpignan, including 13 in the Top 14, the 63-cap international brought leadership and experience to a side battling to avoid relegation.
In a farewell video released by the club, Ritchie showed clear emotion while confirming his exit.
The flanker suffered an ankle injury against Clermont at the weekend and is now expected to miss the remainder of the season, including the promotion and relegation play-off against the Pro D2 finalists.
Reports strongly suggest that Ritchie has agreed a move to Glasgow Warriors.
The former Edinburgh captain is expected to join the Scotstoun side on a two-year contract, strengthening a Warriors squad set to lose several experienced players this summer.
Scotland internationals Jack Dempsey, Adam Hastings and Huw Jones are among those departing, with an official announcement from Glasgow expected later this week.
