“Flying Falcon” Newcastle Star Sets Season Record for Players Beaten in One Match

Newcastle Falcons winger Mateo Carreras has set a new Premiership season record, for players beaten in one single Premiership rugby match. The flying Argentine worked his way past 13 tackle attempts, in last weekend’s clash against Northampton Saints.

According to statistic gurus Opta, Carreras has beaten the most defenders overall throughout the 2022/23 Gallagher Premiership campaign, with 82. He is also top of the charts for completed successful line breaks with 22, and comes in 2nd at the end of the regular season for tries scored with 13.

Only Harlequins’ speedster Cadan Murley has crossed over for more tries with 14. With just one match remaining until the end of the regular Premiership season, Carreras has all eyes for the try-line in Falcons curtain caller against Sale. He will hope to leapfrog Murley’s current record, whilst Harlequins finish off their season with a trip to Leicester Tigers.

Premiership rugby fans will be re-united with Carreras at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, as Argentina take on England September 9th in Marseille. Steve Borthwick’s men will have their work cut out with Carreras and the rest of Los Pumas, with Argentina hoping to secure back-to-back victories over England. They last met in the shock encounter at Twickenham, with England losing by the narrowest margin, at 29-30.

So it will be exciting to see if Carreras can top another attacking chart, and finish as the seasons’ top scorer come the end of the regular season next weekend.
