Phil Vickery has joined Sir Clive Woodward in condemning the RFU’s decision to cut the England Women’s contracts.
The RFU’s director of professional rugby, said in an interview to ESPN that people outside of the organisation did not understand the bigger plan.
In response Vickery said: “It would be good to inform people of the plan before making what from the outside looks like a pretty poor decision, just a thought.”
New contracts for the XV-a-side game will be awarded again in the build-up to the 2021 Women’s World Cup.
Melville told ESPN: “It wasn’t a shock to the ones involved because they knew what we were doing.
“It was a strategy. The problem is the people outside don’t know the women’s and girls’ strategy top to bottom.”
