“Springbok for Surgery” Munster Suffer RG Synman Injury Set-Back After Rugby World Cup Return

Munster have been dealt a tough injury blow, as Rugby World Cup winning lock RG Snyman is set to undergo surgery before returning to Ireland. The Springbok is reported to have injured his chest-shoulder area during South Africa’s 12-11 Rugby World Cup Final win over the All Blacks.

The specifics of the injury are not yet confirmed, however the need for surgery implies that there could be a significant extent of damage. Munster provided the squad update today, however the United Rugby Championship side has not indicated as to when their fans should next expect to next see their titanic lock.

Snyman played in six matches for South Africa during their run to back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles, with each appearance coming off the bench as part of the ‘bomb squad’. The highlight of Snyman’s tournament came in the semi-final win against England, with his 69th minute try spurring on a comeback victory from the Springboks.

Snyman joined Munster in 2020, and has had previously spent two long durations on the side-lines due to injury. The lock has twice injured his anterior cruciate ligament, with Munster fans eager for his return from South Africa. Snyman is reported to be having surgery in the land of the World Champions, before returning to Ireland and re-joining his Munster teammates.

This injury comes amongst a litany of Munster absentees, with Patrick Campbell (ankle), Roman Salanoa (knee), Mike Haley (hip), Cian Hurley (ankle/achilles), Niall Scannell (groin), and Andrew Conway (knee) also injured. Munster head to Belfast this Friday, to face Ulster in the URC.
