Luke Jacobson
Jacobson endured a difficult afternoon and was responsible for a couple of key errors for New Zealand.
His work rate was overshadowed by Simon Parker, while he also struggled to deal with the Springboks’ jackals when the All Blacks were trying to build attacks.
That was an issue across the New Zealand team, but Jacobson had been one of their primary clear-out options in the first Test and was unable to have the same influence this time around.
Verdict: Keep in the squad
It was not his strongest performance, but Jacobson remains a reliable option. Ethan Blackadder could put his name forward after an impressive display against the Lions in midweek, but Jacobson has built up enough credit with his performances to deserve another opportunity in the third Test.
Leroy Carter
Carter struggled throughout the contest.
RUCK writer Bruno Freire was particularly critical in his player ratings, saying, “I personally don’t understand why Rennie would include him in this lineup when he is notoriously poor in the backfield and in the kick battle.”
He was beaten by Cheslin Kolbe’s footwork on several occasions and offered little in attack, which ultimately impacted his overall performance. He did, however, finish well for his try in the 65th minute, taking advantage of an easy footrace to get over the line.
Verdict: Give Fehi Fineanganofo a go
Emoni Narawa and Fehi Fineanganofo have both impressed on the wing during the warm-up matches against the club sides. Fineanganofo gets the nod here after an outstanding Super Rugby campaign for the Hurricanes last season, where he crossed for 17 tries.
Selecting him would also strengthen New Zealand’s efforts to retain his services and could further convince him that terminating his contract with Newcastle Red Bulls is the right decision.
