Transfer News: All Blacks legends nephew joins Championship club on loan

Wasps Academy back Jacob Umaga has joined Greene King IPA Championship side Yorkshire Carnegie on loan.

The fly-half, who signed for Wasps in 2015, has scored four tries in seven senior appearances in the Black and Gold.

He recently helped Auckland to the Mitre 10 Cup title in New Zealand while he has also represented National League Two sides Hinckley and Broadstreet on a dual registration basis.

The young player is the son of former Samoa international Mike Umaga and the nephew of former New Zealand captain Tana Umaga who won 74 caps for the All Blacks.

Having represented England at U18 and U20 level, Jacob Umaga can play at inside centre or full back.

Wasps Academy Manager Jon Pendlebury said: “Jacob has been gaining valuable experience out in New Zealand since April in preparation to continue his senior rugby transition at Wasps.

“Selection at Wasps is tough and we try to use the Gallagher Premiership, Premiership Rugby Cup and Premiership Rugby Shield, as well as loan opportunities in the Championship and National Leagues, to give players necessary game time which is crucial to their development.
