“Women’s Six Nations Finale” – Wales to Play Italy at Principality Stadium

Wales Women will take centre stage at the Principality Stadium on April 27th 2024, for their final match of the 2024 TikTok Women’s Six Nations. This will be the first match at the home of Welsh rugby for the Women’s side since 2019, when they took on the Barbarians in Cardiff.

Wales Women are on an upwards trajectory, as they finished third in the 2023 Women’s Six Nations. They recorded their highest ever attendance in the Cardiff Arms Park, as 8,862 fans packed themselves in to watch Wales take on England last year.

Wales are currently sixth in the World Rugby rankings, and will be embarking on the inaugural WXV1 competition in New Zealand next month, where they will take on Canada, Australia and the hosting Black Ferns.

Ioan Cunningham, Wales Women’s Head coach, said to the WRU: “Every Welsh international wants the opportunity to play at the home of Welsh rugby and to finish the 2024 Six Nations with a Test match against Italy at the Principality Stadium, reflects the ambition of the players, coaches and staff.

“The record-breaking and sell-out crowds we had for the recent Six Nations campaign made a big difference and the atmosphere generated by the Welsh supporters had a real impact on our performances.”

“Scheduling the match at Principality Stadium is the next step to achieving the ambition of filling the home of Welsh rugby for a women’s international by the time Wales face England in Cardiff in the 2025 tournament.”

Nigel Walker, WRU interim CEO says, “The homecoming fixture for our senior men’s side against the Barbarians is set to be a great day out for rugby supporters throughout Wales, with a Rugby World Cup campaign to celebrates and some legends of our game, including the great Alun Wyn Jones, taking part.

“And there are also some great value tickets available for both the men’s and women’s 2024 Six Nations campaigns in Cardiff.

“The Italy game is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate women’s rugby in Wales, with two finals from our community game to be played at Principality Stadium after the climax to the 2024 Women’s Six Nations.

“We have a stated ambition to fill Principality Stadium to its rafters for England’s visit to Cardiff in 2025. Welsh rugby has been inspired by the record sell-out crowd against England at the Arms Park last season and we will be looking to repeat that impressive feat against Scotland and France this year at the same venue, then we move next door to Principality Stadium where the sky – or at least the roof – is the limit!

“If we can set a new record with the match against Italy it will be a fantastic fillip for rugby in Wales and show we are on target to achieve our ambitions for exponential growth in the women’s and girls’ game in the months and years ahead.”

The WRU has also announced a World Cup homecoming fixture for the men’s side who will take on the Barbarians at Principality Stadium on Saturday, 4 November.

It will see record cap-holder Alun Wyn Jones return and face his former international team-mates, as part of the Baa-baas.
