Ben Foden backs Mike Brown to retain England fullback spot

Debate has raged over Brown’s place in the England starting line-up.

Former international star Ben Foden has backed Harlequins man Mike Brown to hold onto England ‘s No 15 shirt until the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan next year.

However, a debate has raged over Brown’s place in the England starting line-up on social media – especially as Jones struggles to fit Anthony Watson, Jack Nowell and Jonny May into the same team.

Nowell and Watson have both filled in and looked accomplished at fullback with the Exeter man scoring off the bench against Italy at the weekend.

“Having a guy who controls the back, who marshals the back three like Mike Brown, there’s not many who do it as well as he does,” said Foden.

RUCK POLL:

“He’s got his big left boot as well. Sometimes that experience at the back is what you need.

“He’s coming to the end of his international career, but I see Mike Brown staying in the 15 shirt until the World Cup,” added Foden.

“Eddie Jones has already made it pretty clear that Brown is his main man when it comes to the 15 shirt, I don’t think there’s enough time to change that.

“Brown sits along the spine of the team and he doesn’t get changed very often.

“With the World Cup only a year away, I think that Brown is pretty much solid for that position.”
