Springbok legend takes over as head coach of Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union confirmed former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers as the new head coach of the Zimbabwe national team on Wednesday.

It is De Villiers’ first role since leaving his Bok post at the end of an unsuccessful 2011 World Cup campaign. The 60-year-old will be hoping to guide Zimbabwe to the Japan 2019 World Cup, with qualifiers scheduled for later this year.

De Villiers hinted at the appointment in January when he said: ‘I think it will be an honour if the ZRU [Zimbabwe Rugby Union] engage me … I will always be around to help the country develop the sport at any level.’

The 60-year-old will be hoping to guide Zimbabwe to the Japan 2019 World Cup, with qualifiers scheduled for later this year against Kenya, Namibia and Uganda.
