Reports abroad suggest Stuart Hogg could leave Exeter Chiefs

Reports in France have linked Stuart Hogg with a possible move to Paris to join his Scotland teammate Finn Russell at Racing 92.

The Scotland captain, who moved to Sandy Park in 2019, is out of contract next summer with Chiefs struggling to match his current big salary.

Rob Baxter is facing a battle to bring Exeter’s collective salary under the new £5 million cap, with Jonny Hill and Sam Skinner linked with possible departures over the weekend.

The report is very brief but suggests Hogg – who previously was linked with a move to Racing before joining Chiefs – is thought to be keen to stay at the Premiership club but is keeping his options open at the moment.

Baxter has admitted that top clubs are currently feeling the squeeze of the salary cap, saying: “Going down to a £5 million cap is a big change.

“That realignment of salary expectations will be challenging. The ability to recruit players from outside the Premiership also becomes harder.

“There’s going to be a significant shift in that picture, probably a bigger shift than people really anticipate.”
